Emeryville Celebration for the Arts

Emeryville has an annual juried show for artists that live or work in the city. My entry was a bit of a scandal for all the granny landscape painters that were also in the show. I had mixed emotions that night. I was happy just to be showing, but juried shows are terrible venues for artists. Fortunately there was no entry fee for this show.

A Sudden Change in Direction

2006 was a semi-productive year. I made these 3 paintings. They are all 20" x 20" acrylic on canvas.

Collision Event

A Violent Birth

The Behavior of Bullets

This is the first painting that I made out of graduate school. I watch a lot of the Discovery and Science channel. This painting was picked for the annual Southern Exposure show. The 2005 theme was "Mayhem." 12"x12" Acrylic on canvas

My Mom Says I'm A Good Boy

This is the first painting that I made in graduate school at U.C. Davis. Working in the same eclectic style, I found inspiration in sexually charged imagery of cartoons and illustrations.

Fat Babies

I made this painting after completing my undergraduate degree in art at San Diego State University in 1998. I was interested in juxtaposing an eclectic mix of imagery and text. Here, I appropriated the "pig-baby" image from an early 1900's newspaper advertisement for tonic. The idea in the ad was that a fat baby was a healthy baby.
